What to plant in March

March is go time for the home veggie and herb gardens. Lots to do and lots of fresh herbs and veggies to get growing. A great season to grow all your quick salad and herbs and prepare for long term veggies like potatoes and winter crops such as broccoli.

Existing garden beds will need a top up with compost and balanced organic fertilizers after spring and summer crops. Also, be sure to mulch well to maximize water retention.

What vegetables to plant now include:

  • lettuce
  • radish
  • carrot
  • beetroot and silverbeet
  • beans and peas
  • cucumber and zucchini
  • leek, spring onions and onions
  • potatoes and sweet potato
  • sweet corn and pumpkin.

Start thinking about traditional winter crops to plant in March and April as well, such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprout and cauliflower.

The majority of herbs can be planted now for a quick fresh harvest.

It’s a great time to get coriander and rocket in along with all the traditional culinary herbs, oregano, basil, chives and many more.

Citrus trees will benefit from a good feed with a balanced citrus fertiliser right now, or alternatively fertilise with compost, manures, etc. and tidy up any citrus leaf miner by pulling off affected leaves and applying a preventative white oil spray.
