What to plant in September

September and the start of spring is grow time in the veggie patch. Now is the time to get a whole range of herbs and veggies in and make the most of the fantastic spring weather.

All of your favourite herbs can be planted now as well – Basil, Chives, Coriander, Mint, Rocket, Rosemary, Sage, Marjoram, Thyme.

To get the best results through spring and summer keep applying compost and organic material to your garden beds to renew soil fertility and give your veggies the best chance. Keep an eye out for the new season pests and diseases as well. New growth on citrus and veggies will attract aphids and other sucking insects.

What to Plant in August

There is no better time than August to really get back into the veggie garden. A great time for getting the garden prepared for the Spring and Summer growing seasons. Don’t forget to renew your garden beds with organic material, compost, mushroom compost and manures to keep your soil healthy and get the best results in early spring and mulch really well after planting.

All of your favourite herbs can be planted now as well includdng Coriander, Basil, Thyme, Mint, Parsley, Rocket, Dill, Oregano, Chives, etc. August is a particularly good time to grow Coriander in our region. 

What to Plant in April

Fantastic subtropical autumn weather in our region through April is the perfect time to really get your herb and veggie gardens going. April is the perfect time to plant so many vegetables and herbs, the list is almost endless.

Don’t forget to top up garden beds with compost and manure and mulch well.

It’s the perfect time to get special winter crops in now, Cabbage, Brocolli, Cauliflower and Brussel Sprouts. Although much maligned, Brussel Sprouts are a truly unique vegetable, flowering and fruiting on the stems, and well worth considering just for the adventure of learning how different vegetables grow.

Kale, the new superfood, needs to be planted now as well, needing the cooler months to perform well. We have a limited window of time in this region to get winter crops into the ground and thriving, and that time is now!

April is also go time for herbs, especially the favourite coriander. Autumn through winter and early spring is the best time to get great results with coriander.
